The Next Best Trends in Wedding Cakes

Let them eat cake! It’s not a wedding without a wedding cake—or some other type of fun dessert—so you’ll want to ensure yours stands out on the inside and out. Obviously, your cake will (hopefully) be all gone by the end of the night, but you’ve gotta make sure it looks good for the camera come picture time! Whether you’re having an intimate wedding and don’t need anything extravagant or you’re blowing it out with lots of people and require a five-tiered cake, there are tons of options out there and various wedding cake styles to choose from. And, of course, wedding cake trends change all the time, with new designs and the like ever-evolving. Here, we dive into the latest popular wedding cake flavors, shapes, designs, decorations, and more. Dig in!
Florals

Florals on cakes are going to be big this spring/summer wedding season (groundbreaking!). Think pressed and dried florals, locally grown blooms, and matching flowers from the bride’s bouquet—all of which add dimension to your cake and create major eye appeal. Who doesn’t love a flair for the dramatic?!
Bold Flavors

Basic flavors like chocolate, vanilla, and red velvet are so last year. Expect to see more vibrant choices like chai, lavender, blueberry, lemon, and matcha—to name just a few. Savory cake notes are also expected to have their moment in the sun, but in subtle ways like with fresh herbs (rosemary, sage, thyme) and cheeses (ricotta, mascarpone). Your guests will delight in the tasty surprise upon forking in!
Textured Details

Gone are the days of smooth wedding cake finishes, instead replaced by textural details that add definition and depth. This can be achieved with textured frosting in the form of ruffles, ridges, and/or waves, doubling as an optical illusion that will definitely have your guests intrigued!
Metallics

Up the glam factor by incorporating metallic touches into your cake, like with silver leaf, shiny sprinkles, and edible glitter. After all, there’s no such thing as too much sparkle on your wedding day! Just make sure the cake doesn’t outshine the dress. 😉
Vintage Decor

Trends are cyclical, as we know, and making a comeback are vintage cake decorations, especially Lambeth piping, a classic cake design utilizing royal icing in maximalist flourishes on colored cakes or white ones. The layers of icing add depth and make for a little throwback moment—especially appropriate if the bride/groom is donning a classic style dress/tux!
Heart-Shaped Cakes

This retro cake shape is no longer seen as cheesy—and it works for a single-tiered cake or a multiple-tiered one. The key is to dress it up with fun, modern piping and decor. Try layers of different colored piping and/or throw in some disco balls to ensure the party stays going through dessert hour.
